Filipino ‘gladiators’ in Rome gear up for tourneys
group of Filipino martial artists in Italy are now in training to prepare for tournaments in Rome and in the Philippines.
ABS-CBN Europe correspondent Jocelyn Ruiz said the members of the Mandirigma Italya (Warriors in Italy) are in intense training for a two-day martial arts meet in July.
“The purpose of Mandirigma Italya during our assembly is to discuss our participation in tournaments here in Rome and in Manila in July 12 to 13,” said Aurtenciano Miranda Jr., the group’s president.
Aside from training in a gym, the members of the group have been practicing martial arts in parks during their days off from their respective jobs.
Librada Ramos, a Filipino martial arts teacher, said it is important for them to train to condition their bodies and minds for the coming competitions.
“We really need a good preparation and conditioning and members of our group come from different schools with different styles of fighting. It is important the preparation for both mind and body and must have control. One should not be aggressive,” Ramos said.
The group has been encouraging other Filipinos to join the martial arts club, which also have Italians as members.
