Korean ‘finger-style’ guitarist in Manila

Korean talent and master guitarist David Kim displays guitar prowess in an upcoming Manila gig.

Kim is known around the music circle as a “finger style” expert. His visit is a privilege to many, especially those wanting to see him play the guitar in a brilliant, unusual way.

The special show, dubbed “Korean Guitarist Meets the Philippines,” is scheduled on June 10, 7 p.m. at the Meralco Theater, Ortigas Avenue, Pasig. Bossa Nova Queen Sitti will perform as guest singer. The musical event is touted as a superb mix of acoustic and Latin music.

Kim is also promoting his album called “Thank The Lord” as musicians from both Korea and the Philippines are joining his act. The album contains contemporary Christian music.

“David is a performer who plays the guitar but it is also important to know that in the center of his heart is God,” says a media release.

Kim’s “finger style” is defined as a technique done by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips or picks attached to fingers as different from picking individual notes with a single plectrum or through strumming. His method is similar to that of the main character in the 2007 movie “August Rush” which tells the story of a music prodigy.

“Finger-style?” is playing the guitar as if it is a percussion instrument, Kim’s technique is more or less called “percussive picking” which is an emerging style emphasized by “sharp attacks on the strings” and “hitting the strings and guitar top with the hand for percussive effect.” A YouTube video showing him play quite demonstrates this.

Kim began his affair with the guitar since high school and went to Jazz Learning Center where he developed his skills. He mostly composes and arranges his songs and titles from his album include “Amazing Grace”, “Now In Your Heart”, “Above All” and “Lord, I Lift Your Name On High.”
