FilAms join ‘Passport of the world’ fest in Chicago
FilAm children in Chicago lent a hand in showing Filipino culture at the Chicago Children’s Museum (CCM) “Passport of the World” series early this month, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
In a statement, the DFA said the Philippines was featured for the first time, so the museum displayed crafts and exhibits, as well as interactive performances by local performers and artists during the weekend event.
The CCM’s “Passport to the World” series showcased the arts and traditions of Chicago’s various ethnic groups to provide opportunities for museum visitors to better understand Chicago’s unique multi-cultural community. Previous “Passport to the World” exhibits showcased other mixed communities in Chicago: Korean Chinese, Irish, Greek, Mexican, Polish and American-Indian. The Philippines is the 12th country to be represented in the series.
The event included a variety of fun and “hands on” programs for kids, including creating arts and crafts; acting workshops with a local children’s theater group; free sampling of Filipino foods; story reading of Filipino folktales in Filipino and English; Philippine native dances; and, traditional Filipino games.
The 3-day event culminated with a parade of Filipino costumes from different regions of the country from the Navy Pier ground to the Museum’s Great Hall led by Consul-General Blesila Cabrera with the Filipino-American community.
In her opening remarks during the program, Cabrera welcomed the audience and thanked the CCM for inviting the Philippines to become its twelfth member to the annual Passport to the World program. She also invited the public to visit the Philippines and discover the beauty of the country and experience the hospitality of the Filipino people.
The three-day event was well-attended by the public, the Filipino-American community, and the officers and staff of the consulate led by the Consul General and Chicago Philippine Tourism Office Director Vernie Morales. The colorful tourism booth attracted visitors to the museum with display of world-class tourist destinations in the Philippines.
The event was made possible with the collaboration of seven community groups: CIRCA/Pintig, Filipino-American Association of South DuPage (FAASD), Filipino-American Historical Society of Chicago (FAHSC), Filipino-American Network (FAN), Kids Art for Peace, Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF), and Samahang Kapatid

This was such a blast!!! The kids that were featured and did the dancing were disciplined and very, very nice. They were kind enough to let me take pictures of them.
