Bandits ambush bus in Lanao del Norte; 1 dead, 3 hurt
One person was killed while three others were wounded after bandits ambushed a rural transit bus in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, Sunday.
Brig. Gen. Hilario Atendido, the military’s Task Force Tabak commander, said the bus was on its way to Zamboanga City when fired upon by at least 10 gunmen in Sitio Bliss, Barangay Kawit Oriental around 2 a.m.
Atendido said the bus driver, identified as Alex Sabanal, was fatally wounded. The driver died while being rushed to hospital.
The injured victims were identified as Lani Lahoy, 19, of Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur; Cathy de Leon, 36, resident of Cagayan de Oro City, and Alcher Etap, of Barangay Balili, Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur.
Atendido, meanwhile, clarified that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was not behind the attack. He said the assailants are members of an extortion group.
Police and military troopers were pursuing the bandits.
