‘Helen’ moves away from RP, on course for Japan
Tropical storm Helen (international codename: Kalmaegi) continued to move away from the country at a faster pace and was headed to Okinawa, Japan, weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday morning.
PAGASA’s public storm signal No. 2 was still up over Batanes province as of 5 a.m. as Helen was spotted 200 kilometers northeast of Basco town. Signal No. 1, meanwhile, was still hoisted over the Calayan Group of Islands.
It has maintained its strength with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 120 kph. It was moving north at 15 kph.
It was forecast to move near Okinawa by Friday morning.
PAGASA said Helen will string bring rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas as it continued to enhance the southwest monsoon.
Coastal villagers in Batanes province were advised by PAGASA to remain on alert for big waves and storm surges caused by Helen.
