July 17 is Pacquiao Day in Bacolod
The People’s Champ’s day, which will be celebrated every July 17, was declared through an executive order signed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia on Wednesday.
“Pacquiao has, in the world of sports, consistently exemplified the best of the Filipino people, giving the whole nation honor and a reason to be proud,” said the executive order.
It added: “By his grit, discipline and determination, he has proven beyond dispute that he is indeed best “pound for pound” boxer in the world today and rightly declared as the “People’s Champion.”
Pacquiao, meanwhile, was expected to fly to the city to receive the “Bugal sang Bacolod” award from the local government.
Leonardia said the award is in recognition of the honor and pride Pacquiao has given to the people of Bacolod because of his victories.
The executive order also said, “He holds his sisters and brothers in Bacolod City very close to his heart and translated his compassion and concern by sharing his blessings with the victims of typhoon Frank in the city, giving P1 million in assistance to them.”
A motorcade will take Pacquiao around the city right after his arrival at the old Bacolod Domestic Airport around 1 p.m.
The motorcade will end at the city hall, where a simple program will be held. A fireworks display will cap the event.
