UST singers receive standing ovation in Spain
A multi-awarded Philippine choir received a standing ovation from their recent performance that wowed audience in Barcelona, Spain.
The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Singers is making waves in Spain as it embarks on a series of performances as part of their participation in the XXIX Festival International de Cant Coral Catalunya.
On August 24, the choir performed at the Eglesya de Sant Ramon de Penyafort in Barcelona that thrilled the audience.
Conductor Fidel Gener Calalang Jr. led the choir in performing beautiful rendition of their broad repertoire which included gospel songs, Filipino songs, Spanish folk songs (sung in Castilian, Gallego and Basque) and Latin American songs like Eres Tu and Guantanamera, and Broadway songs.
The crowd cheered on the choir and gave them a standing ovation after the Broadway portion as well as their last surprise number, a Catalan folk song entitled El Rossinyol (The Nightingale).
Consul-General Eduardo Jose de Vega and the staff of the Philippine Consulate General were present during the performance and even extended moral support to the group.
People reportedly lined up after the show to personally congratulate members of the choir for their fantastic performance and buy their CDs.
The UST Singers also performed at the Philippine Pavilion at the World Expo in Zaragoza before coming to Barcelona.
They are also scheduled to perform at the Shrine of Our Lady of Monserrat and will open the XXIX Festival International de Cant Coral Catalunya in Castellbell i El Vilar.
The choir’s other performances will be in other cities of Spain like Valladolid and Burgos.
