Fil-Ams happy to be part of Republican convention in St. Paul
Three Filipino Americans from New York were all smiles as they took part in the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota that was considerably scaled down due to the onslaught of Hurricane Gustav in the US Gulf Coast.
“I am excited to be one of the people who will elect the next president of the United States of Americ — John McCain,” said New York delegate Myrna Littlewort.
“I am so happy. I am so excited and I hope to make use what my purpose is for my visit here in the Twin Cities,” Marietta Chavez, another New York delegate, said.
These Fil-Ams were at the welcoming reception held at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Because of the hurricane, everyone was aware that their party may not hold a grand celebration this week.
President Bush already canceled his appearance schedule and a celebratory welcome for Gov. Sarah Palin as the republican vice presidential candidate may be scaled down to just a formal announcement.
But the absence of any of that, they said, does not matter.
“I know she’s a very good one and that Sen. McCain picked the right vice president to run with him. She was 32 years old when she became a mayor and now she is a governor. She has executive ability,” said Littlewort.
Officials said they would take one day at a time depending on the development of the storm before making any decisions on how to proceed with the convention.
