Pinoy priest to OFWs in Australia: Be faithful to your spouses
It was a typical gathering of Filipino workers in Brisbane until a Filipino priest brought up an unusual subject.
In a recent Sunday sermon, Father Marce Singson, Filipino-Australian Chaplaincy of Brisbane, reminded workers about the importance of being faithful to their wives.
“I call the attention of the importance of faithfulness not only to the family, not only to the children, but also to the wife because 98% of the Filipino skilled workers here in Australia in particular Brisbane are married in the Philippines,” said Father Singson said.
There were mixed reactions, but few were surprised.
No figures are available, but several sources in the Filipino community say infidelity has long been a problem among some OFWs.
Rodolfo Apquis has been working in Brisbane for three years. He’s quick to say he’s always been faithful to his wife back in the Philippines, but he offers an explanation as to why some of his colleagues are having extra-marital affairs.
“Siyempre siguro sa akin lang ano, sa akin, wala ako, pero sa iba, siguro maano man siguro dahil baka malayo sila sa pamilya, siyempre nalulungkot sila, naghahanap sila nang gamut sa pangangailangan,” said Apquis.
Braulio Pentinio said temptation is never far behind.
“Personally, I have an experience. Somebody has been texting me and wants something,” said Pentinio.
Pentinio said he stays faithful to his wife by keeping his eye on the goal of providing his family a bright future and being reunited with them one day. — Reports from Jerome Somodio, ABS-CBN Australia News Bureau, Brisbane
